Develop a School Run Look
November 15th, 2009 Jump the Q offers the following practical tips for mums to stay fashionable on school run.
Develop a Signature Style. The advantages are huge:
- This almost ‘uniform’ approach allows you be out the door quickly.
- You can buy multiples of the same item.
- You can easily co-ordinate items and accessories
- With only a few pieces you can create several looks.
- With a co-ordinated look you never get caught looking like you just grabbed anything.
- It’s good psychology – when you look good ie Signature Style, you feel good. And the kids may be good!
- A uniform approach creates order and you can more efficiently get out the door
Where to start:
Decide what’s your favourite item that makes you look and feel great. It may be a long skirt, jeans or suit.
Create several looks using that one item. You may want to start a Scrap book or Look book of magazine pictures you like.
Make sure the look suits your fashion personality, whether it be classic, sporty, feminine, elegant so you feel comfortable
Select a look that suits your body shape and personal colouring.
Create a look that is easy to clean and maintain and is child friendly ie bending over isn’t going to expose excessive cleavage or allow people to admire your new underwear.
Be realistic, 5inch heels look great but are best kept for your weekend look
An example may be: You love your jeans.
Consider these looks, one for each day:
- Jeans and fashionable blouse
- Jeans and classic white shirt -
- Jeans and jacket with cami – think Elle McPherson
- Jeans and ‘popstar’ t-shirt
- Jeans and leather jacket
Jeans can be exchanged for black trousers and more classic business looks for work at home mums. Or career mums may want to create a style similar to Coco Chanel. The trick is to change one or two items not every item.
You can now plan you’re weeks wardrobe in 15mins. Put together 5 looks and have them ready to go on a separate hanger for each day.
Moschino’s Rossella Jardini recent quote in Instyle magazine makes a good point “A celebrity is influential when she has a definable style.”
To create a definable style you must understand your body shape and how to dress it as well as selecting items in your best personal colours. Individuals such as Paris Hilton who have developed a distinct look have developed very valuable personal brands as a result. When you have a signature look it tells the world you know who you are. Religiously adopting fashion trends from head to toe reveals you may not have found yourself yet. Adding fashionable items into your core wardrobe is an inexpensive way to maintain your signature style and stay current.
The Today show on Channel 9 convinced TV Executives that a Fashion Showdown was taking place…
November 15th, 2009Those without children in schools may not be aware that that a battle for the fashion stakes is occurring. Ask any mother who does the school run and they will confirm that it can become extremely competitive.
We believe most mums really do care about what they wear to pick up the kids. Often they are busy, time poor and unaware of what colours and styles suit them so they fall back to what is hassle free and comfortable.
Within 3 seconds of seeing someone we judge them. We decide if we like them, trust them and if we want to spend time with them. Research indicates that 67% of first impressions are accurate. Which Mummy are You?
The popular press has labelled three tribes or group mums can fall into:
Yummy mummy: mums who wear the latest fashion trends and who are immaculately groomed. Hair, nails, handbag, shoes and outfits are works of art.
Think of celebrity mum’s such as Victoria Beckham, Elle McPherson, Angelina Jolie.
Then there’s Sporty Mummy: Like Madonna, mums are appearing at the school gate in workout gear, tracksuits and yoga outfits. They appear to be just on their way to the gym or out for a jog.
The last group is the Slummy Mummy’s: We can all admit to a day when we felt like slumming it and wore our comfortable home clothes to the shops. For Slummy mummy’s this is their uniform and regularly make an appearance at school looking very casual. I think most celebrity mums have been caught out at some stage but I think Britney Spears in the past frequently showcased the Slummy Mummy look.
We ask our client’s is your current image a true reflection of who you are and where you’re going? If not, it’s time for a makeover. Building a School run look is easy when you develop your signature style.
A Current Affair – Producer interviews Rachel Quilty
November 15th, 2009Wow, Grazia Magazine has created a whirl wind of requests and queries from the Media. A Current Affair and the Today show were quick to seek more information.
Jo Knowsley Journalist for Grazia Magazine asked about the School Run Fashion Stakes. Do you feel pressure to dress up to take the kids to school? Do you make an effort to look great? Or do you resist all those pressures – and maybe you’re just too busy! – and just ‘go as you are?
Jump the Q had to respond. Little did she know…
Rachel Quilty advised Grazia Magazine journalist,”As a Professional Image Consultant the number of mums seeking our services to develop a school run look has grown. Particularly as a result of celebrity mums such as Victoria Beckham and others regularly topping the “most fashionable’ lists . Gone are the days when seeking the services of a Professional Image Consultant where strictly the territory of upwardly mobile career women or divorcees seeking a makeover or media personalities. Mum’s school run is the hottest new ‘runway’ and the pressure is mounting to dress accordingly.’
Fashion Wars at the School Gate
November 15th, 2009Those without children in schools may not be aware that that a battle for the fashion stakes is occurring. Ask any mother who does the school run and they will confirm that it can become extremely competitive. I am aware of one mum who has a boutique set aside new stock to ensure she is the first seen wearing the latest fashion.

To some extent the school run has become the latest fashion runway, popular media and gossip magazines frequently reveal celebrity’s school run looks.

Hi Rachel,
Today I purchased and downloaded my personalised ePortfolio and am very happy with it. I really enjoy having it here – I can make lists of what features I need to look for/avoid in the particular items of clothing I plan to go shopping for - definitely helps avoid impulse buying as I need to then come home and be sure it suits me!
Thanks
Theresa
Somewhere I lost my style smarts as I matured. I wanted to dress well, but my body had changed and I had no idea what to buy. Shopping drained me and I considered it a chore. I needed help, so I hired an image consultant, who introduced me to the Style Solutions Program. I punched in my body’s characteristics and a personalised shopping program popped up just for me. It was like having my own personal stylist. This program it is easy to use and has taken the stress out of shopping. I no longer make purchase mistakes that sit in my closet.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you

Style & Wardrobe Workshop a Success
November 13th, 2009
Dear Rachel
Thank you so much for a wonderful day on Sunday. Quite frankly I did not know what to expect which was great and now I can understand and endorse the benefit of a personal stylist and image consultant! Well done on a well organised day!
Marina Hirst
Intimo Consultant
Ps – thinking of wearing the “little black dress” on Friday to a function – ALREADY! I know…I owe you!

After shopping with Jump the Q, Marina Hirst discoverd dressing your body shape confidence. Way to go Marina.
Marina send us the following note after she attended our Style and Wardrobe Makeover workshop. We just had to share it with you.
‘Thank you so much for a wonderful day on Sunday. Quite frankly I did not know what to expect which was great and now I can understand and endorse the benefit of a personal stylist and image consultant! Well done on a well organised day!
My motivation to attend a Jump the Q Styling Workshop was twofold. Initially I thought I would be able to educate other ladies on wearing the correct fitting lingerie (which is my Intimo Business) as well as showing the versatility of our travel/leisure wardrobe. My second aim was to learn how to create a more casual look for myself as I tend to dress up most days and find it difficult to create the “school run” look.
However what I learnt was so much more!
I learnt the difference between an Image Consultant and a Stylist and the functions that each perform.
I learnt the importance of de-cluttering and sorting out your current wardrobe, the function of core garments and how you can change looks, simply by accessorising or adding one or two fashion pieces.
I discovered what my style was and how a Stylist can save you time and money and can contribute to your existing wardrobe. I learnt about which designers or retail outlets suit what personality/body type and where to shop and how to create a casual look.
I learnt about fabric, the importance of quality and how to “mix and match” with standard pieces.
I discovered that shopping could be fun and not a chore if you do it with a STYLIST!
Most importantly I was encouraged to look “beyond my comfort zone” and to try something different.
Hence the “before and after photo’s” above.
I never believed that my size 14 should or could wear a LBD (little black dress) which Chanel has always encouraged every woman to own. So when we were on our shopping trip and popped into “Saba” to meet another ladies wishes, Rachel pointed to this little number and asked me to try it on, for fun! I laughed, told her it “wasn’t me” and could not wear such a sexy dress. She insisted I entertain her, and being the whacky woman that I am, I decided to do so!
Wow! I just loved it and felt so beautiful and sexy! I could not believe how the cut/style and fabric luxuriated like a second skin onto my body and made me feel wonderful! I very much believe in empowering woman to feel confident from within and without (through Intimo) and yet here I was experiencing the same glorious feeling of confidence!
Hence, I now own a gorgeous Little Black Dress and on my first occasion of wearing it in public and was complimented by some gorgeous Italian men who appreciated my appearance!
Thank you Rachel, for allowing me to discover another side to the woman I thought I was…
Kindest regards,’

Media Comment – The Body Image Debate
October 27th, 2009As a Professional Image Consultant, I see a lot of different body shapes and sizes. I certainly have my share of women expressing concern with the fact that fashion retailers don’t accommodate plus sizes and they are sick of the unrealistic images of women portrayed in the media. The body image debate creates a them vs us attitude. When really the message should be – own who you are and your choices. Own Yourself!
Interestingly, you don’t have to be a size 16 to have body shape issues. Petite sizes and average sizes have similar body image issues. Sophie Monk is one that immediately comes to mind. As she openly admits to the pressures of being different at school had an impact on her body image. No matter what your body shape or body image. When we are dressed correctly for our shape, we become more confident. Our self image improves as does our body image.
The plus size debate vs the size zero is controvesial at the best of times. Read more on the body image debate. Leave your comment below.
